Fat and Healthy?

Despite what fashion magazines and modern media would have us believe, there is no perfect body shape or size.

In a nation filled with overweight and obese people, it’s no surprise that stick-thin model types inspire such admiration … but stick-thin isn’t necessarily healthy, and overweight doesn’t always mean walking health disaster.

New research out of York University confirms that. The study, published in Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism, found that otherwise-healthy obese people lived as long as thin people and were less likely to die of cardiovascular disease.

We’re not suggesting that you throw out your weight-loss promotional material or tell your employees to stop trying to shed pounds. But it is encouraging to note that the power of healthy living may override the physical stress placed on the body by excess weight.

The key, as usual, is lifestyle. A balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, and engaging in regular physical activity are as important as ever.

The findings of this study simply imply that day-to-day living and making wise choices matters more than the numbers on the scale. Your goal is a staff full of people who value their physical and mental health and actively seek to maintain and improve it.

And if that means carrying around a few extra pounds but engaging in a healthy lifestyle, the latter is the one that really counts.
